Information for New Members
NB: Due to the postponement of our 2020 show, Shrek through 2021 and now into 2022, we haven't taken any new members since September 2019. We expect to be resuming normal intake for our 2023 show, Kinky Boots, with auditions in Autumn 2022.
The society is always looking for new talent, so if you are a singer, dancer or actor, or are lucky enough to be all three and would like to join the society then please contact the administrator, Ella Greenwood, by email to newmembers@carltonoperatic.com.

Company Auditions 2018-19
Every acting member of the Society is required to audition on a three-yearly basis. A successful audition will enable you to join the society and participate in the shows for the next 3 years, the first of which will be Mack and Mabel in May 2018, followed by our 2020 and 2021 shows. Auditions for specific parts for Mack and Mabel will be held separately at a later date.
Company auditions will take place on October 11th and October 18th 2018 at our rehearsal venue in Netherfield. The auditions will be held at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. The audition will involve some drama (a pre-set piece of script, provided in advance) and learning a dance, to be taught on the night and performed in small groups. You will then perform a pre-prepared song from a musical, to be performed individually.
When attending the company audition you will be required to perform a song of your choice that reflects your vocal range. The audition song can be performed to sheet music, or to a backing track, which we would prefer that you email to us in advance, so that we can ensure that we have the necessary technology at hand to play it on the night. You can also bring with you as a backup on the night, your phone or mp3 player with a headphone/aux jack.
Before the audition you will be required to provide a stamped addressed envelope, or an email address. The Administrator will inform you of the outcome of your audition once all have been completed. Please also bring a small photo of yourself to leave with the audition panel.
Please let us know ASAP on which of the available dates you would like to audition.
There are a limited number of places available in the acting company. If you are unsuccessful in your audition, you can still become a non-acting member of the society, and there are a number of options available to you to be involved. For example:
- Help during show week, backstage or front of house
- Assist with wardrobe duties
- Attend / take part in social activities
Should you wish to discuss further please contact the administrator.
Please see here for details on our membership process.
Principal Auditions
Prep sessions for these will take place before the auditions; these sessions are for members only.
The principal auditions will take place during the day on a Sunday; we will confirm the date and exact arrangements at a later date.
Please note you have to have been successful in the membership auditions before applying for a principal part.
Dance Auditions
As above, dance auditions will be part of the company auditions, but there will also be specific dance auditions as part of the principal auditions, for Lottie, and for the tap number (Tap Your Troubles Away). It is expected that most ensemble members will be involved in the other dance numbers throughout the show.
Rehearsals
Evening rehearsals, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, start promptly at 7.30pm and last until 9.30pm in Netherfield, Nottingham. We expect to begin rehearsing for Mack and Mabel with a full company read-through, and regular rehearsals will start after that; exact dates to be confirmed.
Additional rehearsals will take place on Sundays as we get closer to the show. A timetable will be issued once we are underway.
A register of attendance of acting members during rehearsals will take place, should you be absent for any reason can you please inform the administrator and the production team who will mark your absence accordingly. The committee can prohibit any member whose attendance at rehearsals has been irregular or persistently unpunctual from taking part in the performance.
